Honing or grinding: when to use each finishing process

Grinding and honing are abrasive finishing processes, but they solve distinct problems. Grinding removes material quickly and corrects geometry and dimension, being the choice to flatten, size and finish external and internal surfaces. Honing is a superfinishing process that refines the already-sized surface, generating the cross-hatch pattern that controls roughness and oil retention.

In practice, many parts go through both processes: grinding brings the part close to size and honing delivers the final finish on cylinders, liners and precision bores. Each process calls for a specific fluid. In severe grinding, extra cooling protects high-hardness materials; in honing, the oil must keep the abrasives cutting cleanly and ensure dimensional stability part after part.

JEFLUB serves both processes: Lubricorte 3020 RE for severe grinding and Lubricorte 207 for honing and fine grinding. Talk to the team to align fluid, material and the type of finish desired.
