What is honing and why the right oil matters

Honing is an abrasive superfinishing process in which abrasive stones, in a combined rotating and reciprocating motion, remove fine layers of material from the wall of a bore. The result is the characteristic cross-hatch pattern that defines oil retention in engine cylinders and hydraulic components.

The honing fluid has three simultaneous functions: to lubricate the contact between stone and part, to cool the work zone and to remove the fine material and abrasive residues. If the fluid fails in any of these functions, the stones glaze over, the removal rate drops and the finish falls out of specification.

A correct honing oil keeps the abrasives cutting cleanly, extends stone life and ensures dimensional repeatability part after part. Improvised oils, too thin or contaminated, are the most common cause of roughness variation in honing processes.

JEFLUB's Lubricorte 207 is specific to honing and fine grinding, formulated for a superior surface finish and process stability. Consult our team for samples and a production trial.
